Creating Safety - Child Protection & Youth Arts training

We will be running a child protection and youth arts training course on the 26th October.

This one day course is essential training for anyone working within youth arts, but especially those using more physical art forms, such as dance and drama. Developed in conjunction with South East Dance this course
compliments the Arts Council England “Keeping Arts Safe” guidelines developed with the NSPCC. The training will cover current child protection legislation in line with the requirements of the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB),
within the context of delivering a youth arts project and includes a “safe touch” section, exploring how child protection guidelines can be maintained within more physical art forms. It will be of benefit to individuals and
organisations looking to develop their own child protection policy and maintain standards of good practice, providing practical advice and guidelines to develop confidence and sensible structures around child protection
issues within youth arts.
This course is suitable for anyone who wishes to learn more about the issues involved with child protection and youth arts, and develop a “safe touch” approach to more physical art forms, as well as those looking to develop a
strong child protection policy for their youth arts project and/or organisation.
This course aims to:
• Discuss the context and importance of child protection within youth arts
• Explore current CRB child protection legislation and guidelines for working with young people and identify ways to ensure your youth arts project / organisation complies
• Identify ways to recognise potential signs of abuse and protect yourself from unfounded allegations
• Inform on appropriate ways to respond and report possible abuse and disclosure
• Explore issues of “safe touch” and guidelines for using more physical art forms
• Provide guidelines for developing an appropriate child protection policy for your project / organisation
• Identify ways to develop your child protection policy and ensure it remains in line with current legislation

Places cost £29 per person, please email (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for more information

Give a Car

Here’s a great way to recycle an old or unwanted car and donate to Attik Dance at the same time.

If you have an unwanted or broken-down car collecting dust in the garage, Giveacar, the nationwide car donation service, can convert it into a donation.

Here’s how it works:

Giveacar will collect your vehicle free of charge, at a time convenient for you, no matter what state your car may be in. It will then be sold at auction or scrapped, depending on its age and condition, and the proceeds will be donated to Attik Dance

Giveacar only use treatment facilities authorised by the Environment Agency when scrapping cars, ensuring that your car will be recycled in an environmentally friend way. At least 85% of the weight of your vehicle will be recycled, meaning that not only are you supporting the work of Attik Dance, but you are also helping to protect the environment.

If you have a car that you are thinking of getting rid of and would like to donate it to Attik Dance, please visit the Giveacar website for more details – www.giveacar.co.uk

Market Bizarre

The last 2 weeks have been a blur. Lauren Davey, Sarah Chalmers and Grace Selwood joined Clair Beckett to make up our company of dancers for Market Bizarre and what an amazing company they were.

We began devising on Monday 23rd May and after a sweaty company class we were straight into the process of developing the dancers characters ......
that’s when the laughter began and didn’t stop for the next 2 weeks!

We worked quickly to construct a piece which I hoped would appeal to everyone aged 0 - 90 and bring a fun and quirky performance into the city centre.
The costumes were chosen to make the dancers stand out in the crowds and on the first Friday we ventured onto the Plaza to perform an extract of the work for the launch of Plymouth City Festival. Within minutes of the dancers appearing people,e had their camera’s and phones out filming and snapping away.

On the Tuesday of the 2nd week we were joined by 3 other professional dancers and 6 dancers from Attik Youth Dance. We worked flat out to put a performance together to take into the city on Wednesday and the dancers pulled it off with around 50 - 75 passers by stopping to watch each performance.

On the Thursday and Friday we were joined by Java 5, a group of singers who went down a storm with their rich and velvety arrangement of songs such as Mr Sandman and Blue Moon.

The 3 performance days were non stop and gave a us a great opportunity to introduce our work to those who may not necessarily access it at the theatre. The final performances happened at Dave’s Downtown Diner in Plymouth City Market where the staff dressed up and joined in the fun. During the 2 weeks Fotonow and Stacey Hindom snapped away and Emma tried out our new camera so check out the new images and Videos in the gallery . The project was also filmed by Dave Orton who is making a TV programme called The Art of Dance so keep your eyes peeled for that one.

With the pink wigs packed away, the aches and pains from lots of dancing and even more laughing fading we’re looking forward to the next chapter of the weird and wonderful world of Attik!

TR14ers

Camborne-based TR14ers dance group have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. Viewed as the equivalent of the MBE for volunteer groups, it has been awarded to just 20 organisations across the South West.

Dot Peryer, chairman of the TR14ers, said: “We are extremely proud and honoured to have been given this award for the work we do with young people within the local community, and we look forward to building on this success for the future.”

The TR14ers will be dancing tomorrow for their royal patron, the Duchess of Gloucester, when she visits the Royal Cornwall Show. This honour recognises outstanding voluntary contributions and sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering.

Founded in 2005 by Sergeant David Aynsley, of Camborne neighbourhood police team, and choreographer Danny Price, with the help of the late Councillor John Pope when Mayor of Camborne, Norman Garlick and businessman Tim Vigus, the TR14ers provide local children with an alternative to getting into trouble by taking them off the streets.

Now a registered charity, the group has been helped by local and national charitable trusts.

Young members have graduated to become dance leaders, under the guidance of Ben Dunks, of Attik Dance, and now teach dance routines at free weekly workshops, providing the children and young people of Camborne with a safe environment to dance and enjoy healthy activity.

The TR14ers will receive a certificate signed by the Queen and an exclusive commemorative crystal, to be presented by Lord Lieutenant Lady Mary Holborow at a special ceremony.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service committee chairman, Martyn Lewis, said: “Volunteer groups make such an important contribution to their communities, often without praise for the incredible job they do.

“In these difficult times their efforts are even more valuable.

“It’s a pleasure to celebrate the achievements of the TR14ers and give official recognition for the benefits they bring to others’ lives.”

Works Experience

I spent a week with Attik Dance Company and I can honestly say I don’t think I could have had a better work place experience!

For my placement week I got involved with the creation and rehearsal of the Market Bizarre piece, combining a meeting of four coffee loving characters, a barber shop choir, bright pink wigs and a whole lot of ‘quirkiness’! As I got to watch the piece from the beginning creation I was able to see how amazingly quickly the dancers were able to become their proposed character.

I absolutely loved watching the creation of the piece and not once throughout the week stopped smiling; Sally and all the dancers couldn’t have been more welcoming.

Joining in on class was a great experience; I learnt a range of movement technique and really felt like I was part of the group. I am so pleased to have been able to complete my work experience with Attik and I had such an amazing week made available to me. Everyone made me feel welcome and not once did I get bored or stop enjoying myself. I would fully recommend to anyone who wants to work in the dance industry to experience or work with Attik!

Attik 360 Dance Company

‘Stop. Continue…’

We sent a call out at the end of last year to look for dancers to accompany Marcus and Linda in the Attik 360 Dance Company.  We were thrilled to work with 3 professional dancers and one older dancer who we had met on an Attik training course last year, the 6 of them created our inclusive dance company.  The company came together for three Tuesday afternoons to create a piece called ‘Stop.Continue’ for the Attik Dance Platform at the Devonport Guildhall and the Strictly Collaborative platform at the Barbican Theatre. This was a great learning experience and we all took so much from it.  They danced beautifully and we received positive feedback from both performances. We hope to work with all of the dancers again, and want to say a massive thank you for all your time and commitment given to this project!

David Folley

A morning at the Devonport Guildhall with artist David Folley

Myself, Sally, Lucy and Lauren spent a morning with artist David Folley, working collaboratively with him to create some new art works, in the Devonport Guildhall.  It was a wonderful experience working with him and Sally directed us choreographically.

We had great fun dancing and posing in unusual shapes as he painted us on large canvases.  We held poses for about a minute and then collapsed as our legs and arms ached so much!  He said he was amazed at some of the shapes we got into, and so were we!

It was a fascinating process, and so exciting when we were able to take a peek at what he had created.  His works will be displayed at our fundraiser and he is also bringing out a book dedicated to dance and his art works.  To keep updated on his progress keep a look out on our website and Facebook page.

Big Lottery Fund

We have been awarded £303,076 by the Big Lottery Fund to expand our creative dance project for people with learning and physical disabilities.

The funding will mean that we can offer a choice of creative sessions for adults plus a performance company and in Partnership with Plymouth Dance, every special education school in the Plymouth area will have dance activity.

Through the classes, they will take part in creative dancing which will help them to improve their physical and mental wellbeing and gain greater confidence, which in turn will help them access other services and lead fuller lives.
The group we have been working with for the past three years are funded by the Clare Milne Trust and meet 1:30 -2:30 on Tuesdays at the Devonport Guildhall. This group has been running at full capacity for a while and the extra funding will allow more people to dance and we can offer progression routes to keep our current dancers engaged.

Attik 360

Attik 360 interview with class member Linda.

Linda has been attending Attik 360 classes for over three years and is a fantastic and inspiring member of the group. We asked her what she thought of the new venue at the Devonport Guildhall.

Attik: What have you been up to in the classes over the last few months?

Linda: We were connecting someone, and we stretched one another.

Attik: What has been challenging for you?

Linda: I found it hard to concentrate when there was lots of people around, it was crowded and very noisy in there, I did not feel I could cope with it at the old place.

Attik: What have you enjoyed?

Linda: Stretching, skipping around in a circle with a partner and pulling away from each other.  I like the Guildhall, it is prettier.

Thank you Linda!

Attik 360

Attik 360 has moved to the Devonport Guildhall!

We have moved into a beautiful new dance space at the Devonport Guildhall where we will be dancing weekly.  It has a beautiful wooden floor and the big open space has enabled us to move more freely and dance about the whole room! We have had 15- 20 dancers joining us the last few weeks, working on a contemporary dance warm up, some contact work, duets and also some body rhythm percussion.

On Tuesday 21st September we were joined by Kevin Johnson from the Theatre Royal and Symbiotic Dance theatre to lead a physical theatre workshop with the group.  It was great fun and everyone really took to Kevin’s methods.  We made our own characters, we got to know each other more through movement and gestures, and made a short scene to show the group.  Thanks Kevin!  And thank you to The Clare Milne Trust for providing funds for this workshop.

Attik 360

On Tuesday 24th August Clair Beckett and Sally Robbins led ‘Attik 360’s’ second workshop for disabled and non-disabled dancers at The University of Plymouth, click here to find out more!

On Tuesday 24th August Clair Beckett and Sally Robbins led ‘Attik 360’s’ second workshop for disabled and non-disabled dancers at The University of Plymouth.  The two hours began with the dancers exploring the theme of connection by twisting, tangling, falling and catching all the time upping the challenge and testing the groups trust.

We began to work on the idea of connections in contact work starting with mirroring exercises and then adding in the giving of weight which allowed the dancers to lead each other through the space, as they took more and more risks it was great to see the perceptions of where you can take a simple idea fall apart and the duets which emerged were mesmerising to watch.  By the end of the workshop the dancers were testing how long they could suspend movements, how far they could fall before being caught and how much further they could go when supported by another dancer.

We caught all the beautiful dancing, risk taking and sweat on film and the day was documented by photographer Stacey Hindom – Thanks Stacey!

Attik Youth Dance Film

AYD, in collaboration with film-maker, Kevin Clifford, have re-worked their performance ‘Flux’, a piece developed by Clair Beckett based on electricity.

Attik Youth Dance:

Attik Youth Dance spent Saturday 17th July dancing across Plymouth. AYD, in collaboration with film-maker, Kevin Clifford, have re-worked their performance ‘Flux’, a piece developed by Clair Beckett based on electricity.

The performers developed their ideas using three spaces across Mount Wise, Tothill Park and Efford. The weather was somewhat indecisive, but the dancers had great fun running in and out of the rain and catching amazing shots! The first group,  consisted of Faye Dan, Robin Jones and Katie Wheeler. They had the pleasure of working at Mount Wise and really incorporated their surroundings in to their piece. The dancers were extremely lucky to have permission to roam free on the site, an old MOD base, it was exciting and inspiring and great fun finding all the secret hiding places on site.

The second group, split into a solo section by Zoe Mote and a duet of Lucy Rigler and Harry Scott was based around Tothill Park. The weather held out and the performers worked beautifully within their given settings to manipulate and improvise with their material, including the risky task of performing contact work on steps!

The final dancers, Jess Bennett, Kirstie Eyres and Chelsea-Marie Gall performed in an oversized box, and developed a surreal dreamlike sequence performed under a large pylon! The group really used their imagination to create an Alice in Wonderland inspired performance.

.........and the reason for all this dancing madness .......

In September 2010,this film will be presented to the public.  In collaberation with the Plymouth University, the ICCI 360 Film Festival will be hosting a week of film entertainment at the city centre piazza from Monday 13th to Saturday 18th. The festival will present a multitude of innovative multimedia and performance work from international, national and local artists – and this is where we fit in.

Attik dance have a film screening slot, Saturday 18th September at 3.30pm. Look out for the event in Plymouth this September to see all of AYD’s fun and hard work.  This day was of course documented in photos, so have a sneaky peak!!

Work Experience

I’m a student at Looe community school and I have been dancing for about 12 years now! I have spent a week’s work experience with Attik and it has been amazing.

I have been all around Plymouth helping out all the practitioners with their weekly classes and projects that they have been doing with the primary schools.

The classes I most enjoyed helping out with were; “Attik 360”, where adults with learning and physical disabilities go to explore dance and rhythm, I also enjoyed going to Woodlands special school to help with Clair and Pippa. I loved working with these classes because I love helping and seeing the adults and children use the dance space and use parts of their bodies they wouldn’t normally use! It brought a flood of tears to my eyes!!!

Thanks Attik for such an amazing opportunity.

Work Experience

Im a student at Truro College, doing a BTEC in dance and have nearly finished my first year, I am really interested in contemporary based dance and hope to carry this on to university or a dance school.

I have just spent three days on work experience with Attik and this has been such an amazing opportunity to see how they work its been awesome, it has really opened up new windows for me.

One of the classes I went to “Attik 360” was a creative dance class for adults with learning and physical disabilities, this was one of my highlights of the week, being able to dance with them and see them so happy is an amazing feeling, I found myself getting really involved and loved the whole lesson. It has made me think more about what is out there and I hope to volunteer for more similar classes and to get more involved.

I have really enjoyed spending time with the team. They are so lovely and great fun to be with. They are all really passionate and take a lot of pride in what they do individually.

Thanks guys
