A new youth hip-hop company for Attik Dance and the young people of Devonport.

Attik Dance, based at the Devonport Guildhall, will be starting a new Hip Hop company for the young people of Devonport in the new school term, called Attik Breaks. The age range for the class will be from 12 – 19 yrs and the classes will be run by the Artistic Director of Attik, Benjamin Dunks, and award winning Breaker Matt Macklin. The classes will be based in the Guildhall itself. This is going to be an amazing opportunity to learn breaking and hip hop from one of the UK’s best breakers. You don’t need any experience to join the company, just a willingness to work hard and to push yourself to try new things.

We run a dance programme entitled Attik 360 for adults with physical and learning disabilities. These sessions allow creativity in a safe and supported environment. Fitness and flexibility improves, confidence increases and communication skills develop.

We also offer performance opportunities and progression routes for the dancers. This will increase the dancers’ enjoyment of the classes, provide a challenge to keep them engaged and allow new audiences to experience the arts through their friends, family and support workers. 

In Plymouth, the opportunities for disabled people are oversubscribed and all of the dance and theatre groups are running at full capacity. A non disabled dancer has the option to progress, to challenge themselves physically and technically or to continue with the level they feel comfortable with and enjoy. We want to make this option available to people with physical and learning disabilities so that they have access to the things they enjoy, know what they like and are able to choose how they spend their leisure time.

Attik Youth Dance (AYD) is a contemporary youth dance company for 14 to 19 year olds who aspire to a career in dance and wish to progress on to further dance education.

Company members are selected through open auditions and attend weekly technical classes and weekend residencies to produce new performance work as well as receiving mentoring from dance professionals. AYD was set up to provide high quality contemporary dance training and performance opportunities   to enable young people who are passionate about continuing dance at an advanced level to develop to their full potential.

AYD is based in Liskeard as there is no contemporary dance provision in South East Cornwall. Attik are able to nurture the individual to enable innovation and excellence. Many of the young dancers that we have worked with over the years have gone on to professional careers in dance.

Attik has close links with the other youth dance companies in Cornwall and collectively, we want to raise the standard of dance in the region. Through these links and through people we have worked with in the past,  we also give these young people knowledge of dance as a career, awareness of further education opportunities and access to training with practicing professionals.
